Phone 269-9555 NEWS of WENDELL CORRECTION In the personal column it was in correctly stated that I was in volved in an accident with my daughter, Debbie Phillips. I was not in the car, but three of her classmates from E.C.C. There were no injuries and the damage to the car (which was stated in this col umn as $750) has not been de termined. Mrs. Alice K. Phillips Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Smith of Durham visited the C. S. McLean family Sunday. C. S. McLean received word last week that his oldest son, James McLean, died suddenly of a heart attack in Bakersfield, Calif. 3rd Gunners Mate Wayne Todd and Mrs. Todd and two sons left Friday night for Long Beach, Cal. Mrs. Wyatt Sherron accompanied them on the trip. Her husband is stationed at Long Beach. Mrs. Lillie Raper spent part of last week in Burlington with her son. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Todd are in Sarasota, Fla., with her uncle, Mr. Summers, who is ill. Mrs. Curtis Land returned home Saturday after diagnostic treat ment at Wendell-Zebulon Hospital in Zebulon. Ronnie and Tim Conoley of Wil son were weekend guests of their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. G. P. Coloney. The Bill Conoley family spent the Christmas holidays in Miami, Fla., and other places of interest. Jourdan Harding of Washington, D. C., visited Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Bruch. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Williford were business visitors in Durham Saturday. O. W. Pope and Jerry Pope at tended an I. G. A. supper and meeting in Warsaw. Mrs. Maggie Knott returned home Friday after spending some time with her children since the death of her husband. James Raybon is improving at his home after suffering a heart attack and spending some time in Rex Hospital. Mrs. Florence Robbins of Lenior and Mrs. Thelma Todd of Raleigh were Friday guests of Mrs. Joe Ferrell. • WILLIAM THORNTON William Thornton, 57, of Rt. 2, Wake Forest, died Sunday night at Duke Hospital in Durham after a two-week illness. Mr. Thornton was a native of Scotland and came to the United States as a stonecutter at the age of 16. He lived in Rowan County before coming to Wake 20 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Margaret Lyelroy Thornton of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Ted Daniel of Rt. 2, Wake Forest and Mrs. William Frazier and Mrs. Sylvia Johnson, both of Raleigh; one brother, Thomas Thornton of Red Granite, Wis.; three sisters, Miss Jean Thornton and Mrs. G. E. Robinson, both of Saratoga, Fla., and Mrs. Archie Taylor of Hillside, N. J.; and six grandchil dren. Mr. Thornton was a charter member and a deacon of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Wendell. • CHARLES D. MAYNARD Charles Debnam Maynard, 57, of 1700 Dare St., died Sunday morning in Rex Hospital. Mr. May nard was stage manager of Thea tres, Inc., for the past 35 years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Olive Lewis Maynard; two sons, Charles D. and Edward Lewis, both of Raleigh; two brothers, James E. of Raleigh and Carey A. of Chicago, 111.; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Stronach of Petersburg, Va., and Mrs. Martha Mattison of Silver Springs, Md., and one grandchild. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Maynard was a son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Lewis. • MRS. IDA M. JOHNSON Mrs. Ida Manning Johnson, 91, of Rt. 1, Wendell, died Monday at her home after a long illness. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Salem Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Darrell McGee, assisted by Elder Henry Byrd. Burial was in the church cemetery. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. J. A. Andrews of Newport News, Va., Mrs. T. M. Boone of Rocky Mount and Mrs. Bessie J. Branch of Raleigh; three sons, John A. of Bunn, J. L. of Benson and A. B. C. Johnson of Wendell; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grand children and four great-great grandchildren. MACE-STRICKLAND The Union Hope Baptist Church was the setting Sunday, January 13 for the marriage of Miss Vir ginia Ann Strickland and Airman Wayne Arthur Mace. Mrs. Mace is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Odell Strickland of Middlesex and the bridegroom’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Cook, Jr., of Wendell. Officiating at the morn ing marriage at 12 o’clock was the Rev. Walter Mayes, Pastor of the church. Miss Becky Brantley was pian ist and Miss Becky Sue Barnes, vocalist. The bride-elect wore a gown of peau-de-soie and lace. Her shoul der length veil was of pearls and illusion. She carried a prayer book topped with a cascade of carna tions. After a wedding trip, the couple will be at home at Turner Airforce Base in Georgia, where Airman Mace is stationed. Attending the wedding from Wendell were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Cook, Jr., and Debbie and Bill, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Bailey, Jr., Mrs. R. R. Thompson and Mrs. Ester Bridgers. • COUPLES BRIDGE CLUB Mr. and Mrs. William A. Britt entertained the Couples Bridge Club in their home Saturday night January 12. Hosts with Mr. and Mrs. Britt were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Brantley and Mr. and Mrs. William Ammons. After din ner the members and guest, Mrs. Maxwell Hanna, played two pro gressions of bridge. Members playing other than the Brantleys and Ammons were Mr. and Mrs. Warren Dean, Mr. and Mrs. Donald W. Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Tongue and Mr. Britt. High score for the evening went to Mrs. Ammons for the ladies and to Mr. Ammons for the men. Mrs. Hanna was presented a gift as guest player. mmmmmmmmmmmmmsmm HALES CHAPEL Mrs. J. D. Driver The Bill Creech family and the Ed Jeffreys went to Maiden Sat urday to visit Rev. and Mrs. Guy Helms and family. The Vaiden Richardsons visited his uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Tip pett of Lee’s Chapel, Sunday night. Mr. Tippett has just re turned home from the hospital. The Young Adult Class will gather at Parker’s at Wilson Sat urday night for supper after which they will have their class meeting. Miss Pat Driver spent the weekend with Patricia Driver of Knightdale. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Brown and son, Tim, spent the weekend with her parents, the Alva Hinsons of Fair Bluff. Mr. and Mrs. Moore Hocutt of Zebulon were Sunday afternoon guests of her mother, Mrs. Lucy Driver. The Larry Andrews family of Knightdale were Sunday night supper guests of the William Dri ver family. The Harold Parrishes and daughter, Bonnie Jeniel of Stan ces Chapel, were Sunday dinner guests of her parents, the Jesse Drivers. Miss Shelia Johnson spent the weekend with her cousin, Kathy Johnson, near Zebulon. Sunday guests of the Will Creeches were the Durwood Liles family of Garner, Allen Creech, Lois Hagwood and Purvis Liles, all of Raleigh, and the Calvin Hales family. Calvin Hales returned home from Wake Memorial Hospital Sat urday where he was a patient for a few days last week. Mrs. Douglas Brown visited her sister, Mrs. A1 Venette, at the hos pital in Chapel Hill Sunday where she is seriously ill with cancer. The Ross Smiths of Raleigh had supper with the Millard Strick land family Friday night. The YWA’s met Monday night at the church with their leaders, Mrs. B. J. Pearce and Mrs. Pau line Strickland. Miss Kaydene Wilson of Emit spent Saturday afternoon with Miss Carolyn Strickland. The Boy Scout Troop No. 580 is meeting each week with Calvin Hales as Scout Leader and the Rev. Bob Lovell, assisting. Miss Joyce and Gayle Hinton attended the birthday party of Sherry Dale Carter in Zebulon Saturday afternoon. The Ella Price Circle will meet Wednesday night, January 23, with Mrs. Nell Creech. Our associational missionary, Rev. Raymond Moore of Clayton, visited our church Sunday morn ing for worship service. Mrs. Kiva Bunn and daughter, Jean of Wilson, visited her brother, Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Horton, and fam ily Sunday. Diamond Bridge Club The Diamond Bridge Club was entertained by Mrs. Bernice Bunn last week at her home on Gannon Avenue. Decorations of a seasonal motif were used. Members whisting were Mrs. Norman Screws, Mrs. Howard Beck, Mrs. Wilson Grimes, Mrs. Pat Farmer, Mrs. Carsey Tippett, Mrs. George Tucker, Mrs. Douglas Finch and Mrs. Frank Kannon. The tallying of the score pads re vealed that Mrs. Screws was the liigh score winner and Mrs. Beck, low. Each was presented a gift. After the close of the three pro gressions the hostess served Russian tea, apple pie, cheese straws, ham biscuits, pickle and coffee.
